AWARD DISCIPLINES

Painting and visual art award management

Painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed-media work need careful documentation when assessed online. We help organisations shape a visual arts award with a clear purpose, appropriate categories and a practical path from digital submission to recognition, publication or an exhibition where included.

For galleries, cultural institutions, foundations, universities, brands and community arts programmes.

01

Set the artistic and eligibility brief

Decide whether the award focuses on a medium, a theme or an artist’s body of work. Define the relevant creation period, size constraints and entrant eligibility, including whether students and emerging artists have a separate category.

  • Eligible media, themes, creation dates and artist categories.
  • Rules for individual works, series, collaborations and editions.
  • An artist statement and a clear explanation of the selection process.

02

Document the work faithfully

Entry requirements should give jurors enough context without making the process unnecessarily difficult. Different media may need an overall view, detail views and dimensions. Distinguish photographs of an artwork from digital works entered in their own right.

  • Title, date, medium, dimensions and a short description.
  • Overall and detail images with guidance on colour and presentation.
  • Additional documentation for three-dimensional or time-based work, scoped to the programme.

03

Plan selection and the next stage

Make the review stages and judging criteria understandable to artists. If an exhibition follows, establish who handles transport, installation, care, insurance and return of the work before inviting physical submissions. A digital award and a physical exhibition have different delivery requirements.

  • Jury review criteria, shortlisting and any final in-person assessment.
  • Agreed responsibilities and scheduling for exhibition activity.
  • Artist credits, reproduction permissions, winner announcements and certificates.

START WITH THE BRIEF

Questions to shape your programme.

  • Which media and artist communities should the award welcome?
  • Will jurors assess one artwork, a series or a wider practice?
  • Is the outcome a digital showcase, publication, exhibition or a combination?
  • Who will coordinate any physical artwork handling and display?

Plan your next award.

Share your intended audience, discipline, timeline and available resources. We’ll help define the programme and the delivery requirements for your proposal.
